Nicole Chao

New Zealand–Taiwanese pianist Nicole Chao is recognised for her expressive musicianship, clarity of interpretation, and refined collaborative artistry. She performs widely as a soloist and chamber musician and is a founding member of Duo Enharmonics, a piano duo known for its imaginative programming and focus on dialogue and shared musical narrative.

Her work reflects a deep commitment to musical communication, interpretative depth, and the collaborative exchange at the heart of chamber music. Her performances have been described as “complete,” with critics highlighting an instinctive capacity for musical understanding, responsiveness, and ensemble unity.

She completed her graduate studies at the New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī, Victoria University of Wellington, under the mentorship of American pianist Professor Thomas Hecht. She is a recipient of numerous national and international awards and scholarships, including the North Queensland Piano and Instrumental Concerto Competition (Australia) and the Kāpiti Coast National Piano Competition (New Zealand), reflecting her sustained artistic development.

Nicole is a versatile and expressive performer, active as both soloist and chamber musician. Her performances are noted for expressive depth, clarity, and stylistic assurance, earning critical acclaim from national reviewers. The Kāpiti Observer described her as “an immaculate pianist” who “displayed great strength,” while other critics have praised her “dazzling display of speed, agility, and clarity” and “a sense of high romanticism that was deeply rewarding.”

A sought-after chamber musician, Nicole regularly collaborates with members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand String Quartet, and Orchestra Wellington. She is a founding member of Duo Enharmonics, which has toured widely across New Zealand to strong critical and audience acclaim.

Alongside her performing career, Nicole is a dedicated teacher, coach, and mentor committed to fostering the next generation of musicians. Her teaching emphasises musical independence, collaboration, and long-term artistic development. She has coached multiple ensembles to the national finals of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, including prize-winning groups and recipients of the Joan Kerr National Award. She also serves as an adjudicator for the contest, contributing her experience and insight to support and inspire young musicians across Aotearoa.
